Project Background
The following text explains the basic information about the game, the content, and children as developers at their work.
The game includes three groups of children working on the chosen subject that covers the 20th century history of Poland. The game is divided into three paths. Each path is a subject of interest to each group working in the eMapps project:
- period of regaining an Independence 1917-1938 – belongs to the lower secondary school with an academic focus – Gimnazjum Akademickie
- period of WWII (1939 – 1945) – covers path that is under preparation by the lower secondary school – Gimnazjum no 2 Grebocin
- and the Solidarity period (1975-1989) - covers ICIMSS group formed on the contest
Three groups work independently but meet once a month in order to discuss the work progress and any open issue.
Some of the tasks partly involve maths, it’s at the 2 and 3 level, but the main goal of the game is to develop such skills as: reading maps and finding places in territory (which is part of geography as well as history), searching for information (all subjects), using theory in practice (all subjects), using technical equipment and software (part of information technology).
Each of a group has different situation:
- Gimnazjum Akademickie has a special program for gifted children and the 20th century history is taught there at the 5th level. But the subject of the game fits into regional path – cultural heritage.
- In Gimnazjum no 2 Grębocin, which is representative to the whole educational system in Poland , this period of history is covered at the 3rd level.
- ICIMSS group consists of children from 9-14 years old that come from a number of schools so each student belongs to a bit different educational path.
Have a look at the children during the scenario creation and material gathering.
