Ups and downs of Polish Life in 20th century – Communism and Solidarity period (1975-1989)
Action: Toruń, The Old city apartment
Time 1: 1 May 2004
Time 2 : teleportation into the past of 20th century
Uncle Karol’s son Simon, is coming to Poland to celebrate with us May 1st 2004 as an important day of accession to the European Union. Simon’s grandfather Stanisław, who took part in the Battle of England as a pilot, settled in England after the World War II and married an English woman Fiona. Their son Karol (Simon’s father) works for BBC and is very busy so he couldn’t make his visit to Poland as planned. Therefore Simon is coming alone and somebody must pick him up from the airport in Bydgoszcz.
Unfortunately, the parents are busy. Father has to transport an ill grandmother to hospital whilst mother has to take care about a little baby, Iwonka, who caught a cold and has to stay in bed. So the parents fixed some help from their friends from Bydgoszcz. They promised to pick Simon up from the airport and to put him in the proper train to Torun. Ola and Mikołaj are made responsible for meeting Simon at the train station in Torun. Ola and Mikołaj are mature enough and know Torun so it’s not a problem. They are ready for that mission an hour before the train arrival. They have never seen Simon, but know what he looks like from the pictures. They also had an opportunity to talk to him via Skype so there is no problem. They must recognize him.
Happily the weather is fine. It’s warm and train is on time. Simon is getting off from the second carriage of the train as the last one. He has a big and heavy suitcase and an additional bag so taxi is a solution. Unfortunately taxis are not allowed to enter the old city streets so they have to get off at Różana Street. The suitcase is very heavy as apart Simon’s clothes there are many gifts there. It’s the first Simon’s visit to Poland and he wants to meet with all family members so there are many gifts necessary. The children are quite tired with carrying the heavy suitcase. Next to the town hall there are rickshaws that look attractive. They stop for a while. A rickshaw man is coming near and invites them.
Ola asks: Can we take a rickshaw, please? The blue one looks nice – Mikołaj says. I prefer the red one – Ola says. But the black one is the biggest and it will be easier to use it for us and the luggage – noticed Simon. So which one are we taking?
