Hello to everybody.

From the Oskar Kovačič Primary School. We wish we could join the big family whose members get to know each other and communicate using internet and other contemporary means of communication.

Our school is a small rural school in village Škofije which lies in south-west part of Slovenia. The school in the village of Skofije was founded in the begining of the 20th century under the Austro-Hungarian empire. The school was in the old building in Spodnje Skofije – part of Skofije. In the year 1977 the new school was built but it needs to be renovated. With the new school pupils got also the gym hall and outdoor sport playground which they hadn't had before. The school has been named after Oskar Kova?i?, one of the heros from the Second World War.

Our emblem is an open book with an owl and a sun – the symbols of knowledge, bright future and our municipality – Koper.

About 210 pupils attend our school. About 10 % are immigrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Kosovo.
In our village there is also a kindergarten. Children of the age from 1 to 5 go there and they usually continue their education at our school. The headmistress leads both institutions. The school and the kindergarten are quite well integrated into the local community. We organize a lot of activities and local celebration together.

There work about 53 employees all together: 27 teachers at school, 12 educators at the kindergarten, 1 headmistress, 1 secretary, 1 pedagogue, 1 school-keeper, 5 cooks and 5 cleaning women.

Pupils come to school by bus from different parts of the local community.

We usually start at 8 a.m. and finish at 1.30 p.m. The children can have breakfast and lunch at school. They can also attened a lot of different free time activities after the lessons. We also have some pet animals such as green iguana, chincillas and hamsters.

The school surrounding is very nice, green. There are several trees around, mostly olive trees, so we can produce our own olive oil. We also have an outdoor classroom with a pond.

After 30 years the school building needs urgently to be renovated, but there is a money problem, unfortunately, so who knows when we will manage to renovate it.

škofije is a village of about 2500 inhabitants. It is situated just at the border with Italy (Triest) and about 10 km North from Koper (the biggest town in the region). Till the end of December 2007 there was an international border-pass but since then we can cross the border betveen Slovenia and Italy without any documents. The Shengen border has moved to the South, to the border with Croatia. There is still a very important road leading to Italy through the village but luckily a moderen highway has been constructed, so there is not so much traffic in the village any more.

The typical Istrian houses are made of stones. Recently there have been built many modern buildings. From our school there is a wonderful view of the Koper bay and the highest hill in the region – Tinjan.
